Formed in 1885 as an educational organisation and to train Indians in government. Became the leading nationalist organisation under Ghandi in the 1920s and 1930s and developed an effective non-violent strategy to defy the British. Became the governing party of India from independence until 1977

Mohandas (Mahatma) Karamchand Gandhi History

Commonly known as Mahatma, meaning ‘Great Soul’. Known for his non-violent opposition to racial discrimination and colonialism in India. Became spiritual leader of the Congress Party working for Indian independence. In and out of prison, he negotiated independence. In 1948 aged 78 he was assassinated by a Hindu extremist
